ArcelorMittal | Pit Webb 2
Fermont, Quebec
The PIT Webb 2 project is carried out in a complex mining environment requiring rigorous planning, close operational coordination, and a high level of technical expertise. The work aims to effectively prepare the site for mining operations while ensuring optimal water management and safe ground conditions that meet operational requirements.
The scope of work includes stripping, excavation, surface shaping, and the development of access roads and work platforms required for future mining activities. Site configuration and natural constraints require a methodical approach to maintain ground stability and ensure continuity of operations.
Site Complexity, Operational Coactivity, and Water Management
One of the main challenges of the PIT Webb 2 project lies in the coactivity between site preparation work and ongoing mining operations, within a restricted and highly active operational area. This proximity significantly increases project complexity and requires continuous coordination with mine operations to minimize interference and ensure the safety of all personnel.
In addition, surface and groundwater management represents a major challenge essential to maintaining safe working conditions and protecting existing infrastructure.
The work includes, but is not limited to:
-
The design and implementation of temporary and permanent drainage systems to control water flow and prevent accumulation in work areas.
-
Excavation and development of channels and ditches to ensure efficient water evacuation to approved discharge points.
-
Water management during periods of heavy precipitation and freeze-thaw cycles, which increase the risk of instability and erosion.
-
Continuous monitoring of hydrological and operational conditions to allow rapid adaptation of work methods.
HSE Challenges and Site Preparation for Mining Operations
The close coactivity with active mining operations requires enhanced Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) management. Risks associated with simultaneous truck traffic, proximity to heavy equipment, and shared work zones necessitate the implementation of reinforced HSE controls.
Measures implemented include:
-
Rigorous planning of traffic flows and access routes, including dedicated zones and adapted signage.
-
Strict coordination and communication procedures between Beluga Construction teams and mine operations.
-
Frequent inspections of critical areas to promptly identify and correct hazardous conditions.
-
Ongoing workforce awareness and training related to HSE challenges specific to coactive worksites.
In parallel, site preparation work is carried out to deliver ground conditions that meet mining operational requirements, including removal of non-exploitable materials, shaping and grading of work platforms, and development of safe and efficient haul roads.
